Osteomyelitis (MRONJ/BRONJ)

What is osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis: It is a bone infection that develops after tooth extraction, trauma or infection, usually in patients with systemic diseases such as middle-aged or diabetes.

It occurs mostly in the lower jaw due to the weaker vascular nutrition in the jaw bones.

MRONJ/BRONJ: Osteomyelitis due to drug use (bisphosphonate derivatives, denosumab etc…); While drugs that are given as a preventive treatment for osteoporosis and some tumors act by inhibiting osteoclastic (bone destruction) activity, they also inhibit angiogenic and osteoblastic activities, resulting in a decrease in the regeneration capacity of the bone, resulting in a favorable environment for bone infection.

MRONJ/BRONJ TREATMENT

Depending on the size of the necrotic bone formed, curettage and dressing of the relevant area or resection with the surrounding healthy bone are among the treatment options. As an adjunct and preventive treatment, PRF application after extraction and laser biostimulation applications affect recovery positively.
